Allama Mohammad Iqbal: The Coiner of ‘Sare Jahan Se Accha Hindustan Hamara’

Allama Iqbal’s name is entered in golden letters in history of India’s Independence movement by coining ‘Sare Jahan Se Accha Hindustan Hamara’ which aroused pride amongst Indians and exhorted the countrymen to free India from foreign shackles. He was born on 9th November, 1877 in Sialkot, Punjab (unpartitioned). A known scholar of Islamic scriptures, Iqbal, post-graduated (M.A.) in philosophy and worked as a lecturer. However, ‘Sare Jhan se Achha, Hindustan Humara’ composed by him in 1904, brought fame all over the nation (first time published in Urdu magazine ‘Ittehad’). He also published an anthology ‘Tarana-e-Hind’ in 1923 before proceeding to London (1905) for a law degree. After obtaining Ph.D in law from England, he became member of All India Muslim League branch, London and also supported the Swadeshi movement.

After returning from England in 1908, he devoted himself to resolving the problems of Muslim masses, and crusaded for awareness/education amongst the Muslims, subsequent being influenced by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan (the founder of Anglo Muslim School, now known as AMU). Iqbal became a member of Punjab Legislative Assembly in 1926 and presided over the Muslim League session at Allahabad in 1930 where he took stand for Muslims’ share post-independence, although, clarifying that a separate country was not in his thoughts and formation of Pakistan was with his ambition. He also created an excellent literature in Urdu and Persia receiving laurels worldwide. He never left his mission, the welfare of the Muslim community as well as creating the literature and took his last breath in Lahore on 21 April, 1938, however became immortal in the memory of Indians through ‘Sare Jahan Se Achha, Hindustan Hamara’.
