No religion in this world teaches communal hatred and violence, but it is the devil that keeps derailing the human beings from the right path and raise communal hatred and violence. These days we hear words like Islamic Terrorism or Saffron Terrorism linking terrorist activities with particular religion. Those who are involved in terrorist activities have no point to prove that they are on right path of their religion, but devil is using these terms to defame religions. We should know how the devil affects human behavior and how we should tackle the devil efforts to defame religion and spread hatred and violence. For this we all need to be aware of devils’ tactics to protect the humanity from hatred and violence and let all know what exactly the religion states about communal hatred and violence.
The holy books of Hinduism like Vedas, Upanishads and Purans repeatedly talk about the word ‘Dharma’ grossly referring the sum of righteousness, morality, holiness and working according to one’s own nature (guna). The act of communal hatred and violence and lynching someone on the name of Lord Ram or else are actually against the dharma defined in religious books of Hindus. Hinduism in general guides about peace and harmony and also to sacrifice for others. So the people involved in lynching or provoking people for communal hatred and violence are actually defaming the Hindu religion. Hinduism is a religion provisioning numerous Gods and Goddess and freedom of deviation in religious ideology and practices. So Hindu can worship number of Gods and follow different religious rituals.
Unlike Hinduisms, Islam is a religion of Tawheed (oneness of God) spreading peace and harmony for the whole mankind by practice. Those who follow Tawheed with Islamic guidelines derived from the holy Quran and Sunnah (practice of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) are known as Muslims whereas people denying Islamic teachings are termed as Kuffar (non believers) because of denying Quran and Sunnah; whereas those who mix Tawheed with others (Gods) are referred as Mushrakeen. So the whole identity of a Muslim lies how he is about Tawheed. If any person considers anyone as fit for worship except one God called Allah cannot remain Muslim rather turn to be Mushrik. That’s why we see that Muslims are very rigid to adore any person or any object except Allah.
According to Islamic teachings a person cannot be a good Muslim if he is not good in behavior for others. That why the holy Quran and Sunnah guide the Muslims towards attaining Taqwa (positive attitude with instinct believe in Tawheed). The 13th Ayat of Surah Hujarat in the holy Quran states that all men and women are equal except those who are raised in their Taqwa.
O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things). (Al Quran 49:13)
According to Islam, everyone’s life is equally precious irrespective of religious believe. It is not allowed for anyone to kill anyone just to promote Islam. According to Islam killing of any human being is only allowed to protect the humanity from mischief and terror or to compensate anyone’s life who has been killed by any other person. The following Ayat of Surah Al Maida expresses that killing of one person means killing of all human and saving one life means saving all human beings. There is no discrimination between the life of a Muslim or non Muslim.
Because of that We ordained for the Children of Israel that if anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land – it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind. And indeed, there came to them Our Messengers with clear proofs, evidences, and signs, even then after that many of them continued to exceed the limits (e.g. by doing oppression unjustly and exceeding beyond the limits set by Allah by committing the major sins) in the land!. (Al Quran 5:32)
There is absolutely no compulsion about religion in Islam. The 256th Ayat of Surah Al Baqar reveals the freedom of choice in religion for all human being. No Muslim can compel anyone to follow the Islamic believes. In India also no Muslim ruler ever compelled any Indian to convert Islam. They adjusted their ruling by respecting different diversified religious believes among different communities. Thus different religious communities had been living together in India.
Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things. (Al Quran 2:256)
During the ruling of second Islamic Caliph (Hazrat Ummar Bin Khattab RA) the lives of non believers were considered equal to lives of Muslims. Life and property of zimmis (non-Muslim subjects) was as inviolate as that of a Muslim. If a Muslim by chance killed a non-Muslim, Hazrat Umar made sure that the killer was handed over to the family of the victim. Once a member of the tribe of Bakr ben Wail killed a Christian of the tribe of Jabrat. Hazrat Umar instructed the chief of the Wail tribe to hand over the killer to Hunain, a relative of the victim, who had the killer pay the price in kind. Who can better follow the teachings of Quran and Sunnah than Sayedna Abu Bakr and Umar bin Khattab? They knew that Islam ask for justice and there is no room for unjust in Islam especially based on religious discrimination.
The 58th Ayat of Surah An Nisa clearly guides the humanity to deliver the trust and judge with justice among the people. That’s why at time when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was instructed to move to Madina, before leaving his house, he handed over the people’s property to Hazrat Ali (RA) with instruction to deliver the trusts entitled to non Muslims of Makkah.
Surely, Allah commands you to deliver trusts to those entitled to them, and that, when you judge between people, judge with justice. Surely, excellent is the exhortation Allah gives you. Surely, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. (Al Quran 4:58)
The 8th Ayat of Surah Al Maida clearly guides the Muslims to uphold justice irrespective of the fact that the case is between you and your enemy.
O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allah and be just witnesses and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety, and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Well Acquainted with what you do. (Al Quran 5:8)
In 135th Ayat of Surah An Nisa again Muslims have been guided to uphold justice.
O you who believe, be upholders of justice – witnesses for Allah, even though against (the interest of) your selves or the parents, and the kinsmen. One may be rich or poor, Allah is better caretaker of both. So do not follow desires, lest you should swerve. If you twist or avoid (the evidence), then, Allah is all-aware of what you do. (Al Quran 4: 135)
So Muslims are never allowed to discriminate people on the basis of religion and social status. The 108th Ayat of Surah Anaam disallows Muslims to revile other religious communities. So Muslims in general avoid commenting anything unwanted about Gods of other religions.
Do not revile those whom they invoke other than Allah, lest they should revile Allah in transgression without having knowledge. This is how We have made the deeds of every community attractive in their sight. Then, to their Lord is their return, after which He shall tell them what they have been doing. (Al Quran 6:108)
At a time when incidences of lynching is on rise in India and it seems that Muslims are being guided to unit for retaliation towards such incidence, it is much better to take lesson from following Ayaat of Surah Al Araaf. These Ayaat were revealed at time when non Muslims had not only brutally killed Harat Humza (RA) but also made pieces of his body. At that time when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had just thought about taking revenge, he was guided to take forgiveness and tolerance as habit.
(O Prophet,) take forgiveness (as your habit), enjoin virtue, and ignore the ignorant. Should a stroke from the Satan strike you, seek refuge with Allah. Surely, He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. Surely when the God-fearing are touched by any instigation from Satan, they become conscious (of Allah), and at once they discern (the reality). As for the brethren of satans, they are dragged by them on into the error, and they do not desist. (Al Quran 7:199-202)
In the above Ayaat we are guided to seek refuge with Allah against stroke from the Satan who guides us to be impatient and to take revenge from people who do unfair. Though the following Ayaat of Surah An Nahl allows the victims to punish the person not be more that the level he was afflicted, it is enjoined to endure patiently. There is clear lesson for those who feel distress and grieve for the rising incidences of communal hatred and violence.
And if you punish (your enemy, O you believers in the Oneness of Allah), then punish them with the like of that with which you were afflicted. But if you endure patiently, verily, it is better for As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.). And endure you patiently (O Muhammad SAW), your patience is not but from Allah. And grieve not over them (polytheists and pagans, etc.), and be not distressed because of what they plot. Truly, Allah is with those who fear Him (keep their duty unto Him), and those who are Muhsinoon (good-doers). (Al Quran 16:126-128)
Due to provocation by devil, often it is very difficult for the people to hold patience and react positively. So the following Ayaat of Surah Al Momenoon directs us to repel evil with the best and seek refuge of Allah in case of strokes from devils.
Repel evil with that which is best. We are well aware of what they describe. And say, “My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the strokes of the satans (devils), and I seek refuge in You, my Lord, even from their coming near me.” (Al Quran 23:96-98)
In the 90th Ayat of Surah An Nahl Allah enjoins us to do justice and adopt good behavior. This particular is being cited during almost all khutba (sermon) in Muslim’s Juma prayers to keep them reminding about holding justice and good behavior.
Allah enjoins to do justice and to adopt good behavior and to give relatives (their due rights), and forbids shameful acts, evil deeds and oppressive attitude. He exhorts you, so that you may be mindful. (Al Quran 16:90)
Again in following Ayaat of Surah Ha Meem Sajda it is sought that we should always repel the evil with one which is better by holding patience at time of anger and excuse those who treat badly. Here again we have been guided to seek refuge in Allah from devil strokes.
The good deed and the evil deed cannot be equal. Repel (the evil) with one which is better (i.e. Allah ordered the faithful believers to be patient at the time of anger, and to excuse those who treat them badly), then verily! he, between whom and you there was enmity, (will become) as though he was a close friend. But none is granted it (the above quality) except those who are patient, and none is granted it except the owner of the great portion (of the happiness in the Hereafter i.e. Paradise and in this world of a high moral character). And if an evil whisper from Shaitan (Satan) tries to turn you away (O Muhammad SAW) (from doing good, etc.), then seek refuge in Allah. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (Al Quran 41:34-36)
Almost similar teachings have been given in the following Ayaat of Surah Shoora where despite permission to recompense an evil, we are guided to forgive and reconcile.
The recompense for an evil is an evil like thereof, but whoever forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is due from Allah. Verily, He likes not the Zalimoon (oppressors, polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc.). And indeed whosoever takes revenge after he has suffered wrong, for such there is no way (of blame) against them. The way (of blame) is only against those who oppress men and wrongly rebel in the earth, for such there will be a painful torment. And verily, whosoever shows patience and forgives that would truly be from the things recommended by Allah. (Al Quran 42:40-43)
It might be easy for pious person hold patience, forgive others and adopt good behavior even at time of hardship and attack by enemies, but often we see that most of the people get provoked by devils to take excessive revenge for affliction. So we should always be very cautious from the devil strokes. The devil tends to perverts one’ thought and misguides many people in understanding the lessons from holy Quran. The person who read holy Quran with bias intention often gets deviated from right path. Many opponents of Islam used to cite Ayaat like following to prove their stand that Islam encourages communal hatred among people.
So, when the sacred months expire, kill the Mushriks wherever you find them, and catch them and besiege them and sit in ambush for them everywhere. Then, if they repent and establish Salāh and pay Zakāh, leave their way. Surely, Allah is most Forgiving, Very-Merciful. (Al Quran 9:5)
The above Ayat and other Ayaat like this is actually related to defense and was particularly revealed about those Mushrikoon who has not only breached the established civil and defense contracts with Muslims but also conspired and helped Muslim’s enemies to kill Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and their companions. In fact these instructions was required to insulate the Islamic kingdom from such enemies who kept pretending themselves as Muslims or well wishers of Muslims but were actually enemies of Muslims and were supportive to enemies of Muslims and tend to ditch the Muslims at crucial war time or at time of threats and crisis. So they were disallowed to remain anymore in the newly establishment Islamic Kingdom. They were allowed to move away during the period of peace months, otherwise threatened to be killed after expiry of the period of peace. So these Ayaat cannot be considered as general rule about all non Muslims in all conditions who otherwise don’t harm Muslims or Islamic rulings.
This fact can be easily understood by reading Surah Mumtahna wherein Muslims have been categorically guided to not make Muslim’s enemies’ as their friends but were instructed to fairly deal with such non Muslims who are not enemies of Muslims.
Perhaps Allah will make friendship between you and those whom you hold as enemies. And Allah has power (over all things), and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity. It is only as regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allah forbids you to befriend them. And whosoever will befriend them, then such are the Zalimoon (wrong-doers those who disobey Allah). (Al Quran 60:7-9)
So Muslims need to distinguish between non Muslims harming Muslims and those who are peace loving and do not harm Muslims. It has also been instructed to declare that Muslims have their own faith and non Muslims have their own faith.
Say, “O disbelievers, I do not worship that which you worship, nor do you worship the One whom I worship. And neither I am going to worship that which you have worshipped, nor will you worship the One whom I worship. For you is your faith, and for me, my faith.” (Al Quran 109:1-6)
If in India despite religious freedom, Muslims finds some nasty non Muslims trying to harm them through conspiracies, taunting, teasing and lynching they should better seek refuge of Allah. The 5th Ayat of Surah Mumtahana may be very helpful for Muslims to be protected from persecutions by Non Muslims in this age of increased communal hatred and violence.
Our Lord, do not make us persecuted by those who disbelieve, and forgive us, our Lord! You, only You, are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.” (Al Quran 60:5)
