Jamiat Legal Aid to terror accused

New Delhi: Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, the powerfull body of Muslims in India, on Thursday said it is opposed to terrorism but added that it can’t support arrests of innocents in its name. The Jamiat also said it will provide legal aid to 10 Muslim youths arrested by the NIA, Delhi Police and Uttar Pradesh ATS in a joint operation carried Wednesday.

“The Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind is fighting against terrorism since a very long time and it is opposed to violence in all its form. But, arrest and harassment of innocent youths in the name of terrorism is unacceptable”, Jamiat Ulama General Secretary Mahmood Madani said.

Mahmood Madani was responding to the arrest of 10 Muslim youths, including a Mufti, from Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a joint operation with Uttar Pradesh Anti Terror Squad (ATS) and Delhi Police Special Cell.

The NIA said those arrested were planning a major attack in the national capital and other parts of the country. It also claimed seizing a huge quantity of explosives, a country-made rocket launcher, 100 mobiles and 135 SIM cards. The NIA said the arrested youths were inspired by ISIS.

Indian Muslims have repeatedly denounced the ISIS and other terror outfits saying they have nothing to do with violence against innocents. More importantly, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on several occasions in the past four years have said terror fight ISIS had failed to grab a foothold in India despite its large Muslim population.

Following the latest arrest of Muslim youths by the NIA from Amroha in Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi, a delegation of Jamiat Ulama met the relatives of the accused and assured them legal aid.

“Most of the arrested accused belong to poor families. Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind is extending legal aid to them as they are not in a position to bear the cost needed to fight their cases”, Mahmood Madani said.

Mahmood Madani also said that the Muslim youths were framed in false cases earlier too but many of them have been acquitted by the court.
