AIMPLB calls triple talaq Bill unconstitutional, anti-Muslim

Women office bearers and members of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, (AIMPLB), leading the unprecedented mammoth and historic silent rally by Muslim women of Rajasthan in Jaipur

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) called the ‘triple talaq’ ordinance an “anti-Muslim, undemocratic and unconstitutional political stunt”, and demanded that the government withdraw it.

In a statement, the AIMPLB said that treating husbands who give triple talaq as criminals with punishment of jail term for three years against human rights. “The three-year jail punishment for husbands will ruin families economically and destroy homes,” read the statement signed by Asma Zehra, head of the AIMPLB’s women’s wing.

“The government neither consulted any religious scholar, Muslim cleric or intellectual, nor did they discuss it in the Rajya Sabha where they failed to pass it. The Opposition parties took a firm stand that it is a defective bill, ill drafted and full of technical flaws and should be sent to select committee,” read the statement.

It added that the ordinance is an interference in the Muslim personal law and violates Fundamental Rights guaranteed in the Constitution. More than five crore Muslims had sent signed petitions to the law commission against the bill, and over 250 protest meetings and rallies were held to oppose it where more than two crore Muslim women took part in, said Zehra.
