Allah Baksh Sumro, a Freedom Fighter who sacrificed his life for communal harmony

An opponent of mixing of religion in politics, religio-centric political parties and ultimately division of the country on religious lines. Allah Baksh Sumro was born in 1887 in erstwhile Sindh Province of undivided India. Sidelining the family business, he involved himself in Social/ Public service and was elected a member of Jakobabad Municipality, besides, being the Premier of the Sindh Province in 1935.

He did not join Muslim League which purportedly indulged in communal politics, viewing that mixing politics and religion was against the tenet of Islam. In an open letter, he appealed the general people and the leaders of freedom movement to refrain from creating communal divide for reaping political ends. He raised voice against British repression and took active part in ‘Quit India’, Khadi Movements. Sumro, a fearless speaker against communalism, was assassinated by communal forces on 14th May, 1943.
