NEW DELHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru University has finally accepted the PhD thesis from outspoken research scholar Umar Khalid after repeatedly getting snubbed by the Delhi High Court.

Khalid and some other students including Kanhaiya Kumar were last month punished by a high-level committee of JNU for their alleged role in a controversial event at the campus two years ago. Even though the High Court is seized with the case, JNU decided to fine Kumar and rusticate Khalid. The court overruled the university decision and ordered it to accept their PhD theses.

The JNU committee, in the first week of July, had recommended actions against the students. Khalid and others moved the High Court. When on 23rd July, the last date for submission of PhD thesis, Khalid went to the university to submit his thesis, the officials refused it. He rushed to the Delhi High Court later in the day and got favorable order, yet the JNU administration refused to accept his thesis.

This Thursday (2nd Aug), the university accepted his thesis.

Khalid went to Twitter: “न उनकी हार नई है न अपनी जीत नई..” Bhakts, read that thesis before asking me about tax payer’s money again! Despite several hurdles created by the sanghi VC, I finally submitted my PhD today. Hurdles are not going to come to an end in life, but ready to face them. Thank u all.”

On 30th July, he had said: “It has been over a week & in violation of repeated orders of the Delhi HC, JNU admin continues to hold up my PhD submission. Anirban writes on JNU admin and the govt’s arm-twisting tactics to coerce students into silence. But that will not happen.”

Former judge of Supreme Court, Justice Markandey Katju congratulated him.

“Congratulations 2 @UmarKhalidJNU for submitting Ph.D. thesis. JNU administration had earlier behaved stupidly in debarring u from doing so. Far from being anti-national I regard u a patriot, bcoz u r genuinely concerned about welfare of Indian people. Ignore Lord Bhow Bhow & his ilk,” Justice Katju tweeted.
