SC on urgent hearing of Ayodhya Case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Monday once again refused an urgent hearing in Babri Masjid title case saying it has already ruled that the next hearing date of the case will be decided in January 2019.

The Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, a right-wing organisation, had petitioned the apex court to take up the Babri Masjid title suit, also known as Ayodhya case, earlier than January.

“We have already passed the order. The appeals are coming up in January. Permission declined,” said Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.

The apex court had on October 29, 2018 deferred the hearing in the case till January 2019.

“We will fix the date of hearing of Ayodhya dispute case before the appropriate bench in January,” Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said making it clear that there will not be any urgent hearing in the case.

Babri Masjid, the historic mosque beleived to have been built by Mir Baqi, one of the commanders of Mughal Emperor Babur, was thrown into a controversy as a result of India’s communal politics. It was at last demolished in broad daylight on December 06, 1992 by Hindu extremists in the presence of top RSS, BJP, VHP, Bajrang Dal and other right wing groups’ top leadership, and demanded to build a Ram temple on the site.

Later on, the Allahabad High Court had in a verdict pronounced in 2010 equally divided the 2.77 acres of land between Ram Lalla, Sunni Wakf Board and Nirmohi Akhara. Hindus and Muslims however have both challenged the HC verdict in the Supreme Court hearing of which was supposed to start from October 29..

The Lok Sabha elections are likely to be held in April, 2019. A number of political parties are of the view that the hearing in the case should be held only after the elections.

However, right wing Hindu extremists, including the ruling BJP, are in favour of early hearing. Some of them have even demanded from the government to enact a law to build Ram temple if a verdict in the case is further delayed.
